The Mt. San Antonio College Foundation has raised and awarded hundreds of thousands of scholarship funds to deserving students since 1967. Scholarships are important to Mt. SAC students. They help offset costs for tuition, fees, living expenses, books, and supplies. For low-income students, in particular, scholarships make it possible for them to stay in school and pursue their dreams. For others, scholarships recognize academic excellence and leadership and enable students to continue their education.
Ways You Can Donate: We encourage you to join our growing ranks of scholarship donors. You may do this with annual gifts or by establishing a long-term endowed scholarship.
With a donation of $10,000 or more, endowed scholarships are a way to provide an ongoing funding source for years to come. The Foundation conservatively invests these funds and uses only the interest toward scholarships each year.
Scholarship Designation: The Foundation works closely with donors, if they choose, to establish scholarship criteria and select the program, vocation, or academic major to designate the scholarship. Many donors prefer the Foundation and College to decide the area or candidate with the greatest need. Some scholarships are awarded on financial need, others on scholastic merit.
Selection Process: Scholarship candidates apply to the College’s Financial Aid Department, although not all scholarships require students to have qualified for state or federal financial assistance. A scholarship committee, consisting of faculty, Foundation and College staff, first selects the most qualified candidates the pool of applicants and then matches them with the most appropriate scholarship award. Within certain guidelines, donors may get involved in the selection process.
NEW PROGRAMS
Our “Close an Escrow, Buy a Book” program gives local real estate professionals an opportunity to help students purchase their textbooks. The professional commits for one year to contribute $10 from every escrow closed to the Mt. SAC Book Fund. This special fund is available to students, who despite receiving other forms of financial aid, may need additional money to purchase textbooks or course materials required by their classes.
The Give the Gift of Scholarship campaign is conducted during the holiday season. Holiday trees are placed at prominent Mt. SAC locations. Each tree contains gift tags with incremental donation amounts up to $200. Students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors pull tags from the trees and give accordingly to the Foundation.
The first effort in 2005 raised $2,000. This year, the program is being expanded into the community by placing additional trees at the lobbies of local banks and other business sites, which will provide their customers the opportunity to support our students.
